Future of smart cities

We live in a time when technology is an integral part of our lives. It is so obvious to us that we stopped noticing it. Our life becomes more and more “smart” thanks to phones that think for us and make our lives easier. Have you ever wondered what makes your city “smart”?

Each city in the world is currently striving to be called a “smart city”. But do we know what it really means? It is not just about improving our lives by automating all the daily activities of residents. It is also important to do it in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources… And not to destroy our planet more than we have already managed to do. It is not a cheap or easy task. After all, you will not be able to replace, for example, all buses in the city with electric ones overnight.

But what if you could start from scratch? If you could collect existing technologies, put them together, and create a smart city of the future? The idea probably seems unreal and very expensive to you. And you are right, it is not a cheap venture. But it is very real. Moreover, someone has already taken care of it…

NEOM

This is the name of the city to be put into use in 2025. The name comes from two words – Greek “NEO” (new) and Arabic “Mustaqbal” (future). Behind the idea is the Prince of Saudi Arabia – Mohammed bin Salman, who plans to spend $500 billion on it.

NEOM is located in Tabuk belonging to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and covers an area of 26,500 km2. It has access to the sea and the mountains. It is promised to preserve the nature that exists there in 95%. But what will make the city smart?

What can we expect?

First of all, it will be fully powered by renewable energy sources. Cars will be eliminated – everything you need will be within a 5-minute walk. And the most distant places can be reached by public transport in 20 minutes. Despite such amenities, the city is supposed to motivate you to an active lifestyle and to commune with nature. Thanks to its location, it gives you many opportunities – one day you can swim in the sea, and the next day you can climb mountains.

What else will NEOM stand out for? The website says that they have divided their vision into 14 sectors:

  • Design and Construction
  • Education
  • Energy
  • Entertainment and Culture
  • Food
  • Health and Well-Being
  • Manufacturing
  • Media
  • Mobility
  • Services
  • Sport
  • Technology and Digital
  • Tourism
  • Water

We only know about each of them as much as the author told us. Beautiful utopian visions of the future are presented, but not many details. It’s hard to describe what solutions will be implemented if in most cases we have no idea that they exist. However, some information about planned implementations has leaked to the Internet. And let me tell you, they sound like they were taken from sci-fi movies.

Probably teachers will be replaced with holograms, robots will clean houses. There will be artificial clouds in the sky, thanks to which it will rain, and an artificial moon will be lit at night. In addition, they will build an island with dinosaurs from Jurassic Park and restaurants with Michelin stars will be scattered throughout the city. Is it true? Unfortunately, I don’t know, but I think it is possible.

Who stands behind NEOM?

Currently, a group of specialists from around the world is involved in the project, trying to meet the expectations of both the originator and all of us who are waiting for news on NEOM.

You can apply to work on the construction of NEOM right now. So if you have skills that can be useful in any of the sectors, send your CV. Maybe thanks to this you will become one of the first inhabitants of the most intelligent city in the world.

Otherwise, we invite you to wait with us for the next updates from the city of the future. There are still many cards left undiscovered. We will definitely be following them and we promise that as soon as we know more, you will be able to read about it on our blog! 🙂
